Borrowing Soraya’s Adaptive Items
There are quite a few of Soraya’s adaptive items that have been SO helpful as I recover from surgery!
Soraya has been gracious with sharing. It’s honestly been a bit humbling using these products—my need for them is temporary while I heal, whereas she will continue to need them. I am grateful there are things out there that can make recovery easier, and help make daily life easier for people with special needs like Soraya.
The main adaptive item that I have been using is the stair lift. Avoiding a bunch of stairs helps make sure that I don’t overdo it physically (I can tell when I overdo it as there is more output/blood in my drains 🫣).
I also have been utilizing a laptop desk. This allows me to type without extending my arms. My surgeon says I need to have t-rex arms for 3-4 weeks, and having a laptop on any other table is just too far of a stretch—literally. Using a tablet holder to watch movies and do Zoom meetings (I have been participating in previvor research and undiagnosed disease research!) has been really helpful as well.
Lastly, we got a bidet earlier this year to help with Soraya’s bathroom hygiene and it has been a LIFESAVER! I have not been able to shower in almost 2 weeks and the only reason I am somewhat keeping up with my hygiene is the bidet (and my recent hair wash Christmas present from dear friend Sarah Schultz and Safi’s sponge bath skills 🙏🏾).
I asked Leena to make a video to share with others what things have been useful or if anyone is curious on what things can be multi-purposed for post-surgery recovery! This is what she put together ❤️
If there any other adaptive items you recommend, drop them in the comments please!
