How We’re Sucking the Joy Out of Life This November
While on our Make-A-Wish trip to Hawaii in 2022, our family motto, Suck the Joy Out of Life, was born. At its core, it means intentionally seeking out joyful, fun experiences even (or especially!) when facing unimaginable hardship.
Our Hawaii trip taught us that we can’t wait for joy to just magically appear– we have to make it happen. Whether that looks like doing something as simple as watching a favorite movie together on the couch or something grand like fulfilling a BIG bucket list item. Speaking of...
WE ARE GOING BACK TO HAWAII!!!!!
This idea popped up about a month ago when all three girls told us they wanted to go back. Safi and I were a bit hesitant at first...things have changed so much since 2022, especially with Soraya getting more tired and needing more time on the vent. Before even considering the idea, we made sure the girls understood that this trip wouldn’t be the same as the last time we were there.
The girls responded that they knew the trip wouldn’t look the same. Soraya said she’d like to go anyway because being there would remind her of the happiest she’s ever been. Yasmeen and Leena were in agreement as long as Soraya’s medical team was on board as well.
This set everything in motion– we reached out to her palliative care doctor and pulmonologist, who both agreed that we could go! They just had two stipulations: that we go sooner rather than later, and to understand we’re taking a risk and that if Soraya gets sick, she’ll need to be admitted to a hospital in Hawaii.
It took Soraya less than a second to respond that it would be worth the risk.
So, off we go in November. Safi has already booked the same ROOM as our Make-A-Wish trip for the girls! We welcome anyone to join us on another unforgettable adventure ✈️
